High School Block:
Mathematics Essentials
Mathematics Essentials is designed to address the unique needs of students who have limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE). This curriculum honours the diverse range of prior knowledge(s), skills, and experiences that SLIFE have, while connecting through targeted instruction to numeracy skills that they have not yet been provided the opportunity to learn. Mathematics Essentials is designed to foster English language development while acquiring numeracy skills in a transitional sheltered context that is intentionally connected to learners’ personal needs. Learners will progress through essential components of the Mathematics continuum, with flexibility in course duration and modes of instruction. As the course is designed to consider specific linguistic goals alongside numeracy skills, learners will benefit from intentional instruction in academic strategies, including the abstract nature of mathematics. While the primary design is for learners to exit the course once they have acquired sufficient skills to enter appropriate prescribed mathematics courses, this course may also serve learners who, due to age limitations, will need to pursue alternate pathways.
Learners are expected to enrol in Mathematics Connections after gaining experience in Mathematics Essentials. Mathematics Essentials is a credit course in the Flexible Credit Hours cluster, while Mathematics Connections is a credit course in the Mathematics cluster.
Mathematics Essentials provides opportunities to develop mathematics skills across the continuum of learning, including opportunities to build English proficiency and academic skills as well as to become familiar with abstract ways of thinking. Developed mathematics skills and New Brunswick Global Competencies will lead to increased success in future mathematics courses, post-secondary, work ready, and life contexts. In Mathematics Essentials, mathematics instruction and assessment are differentiated to the experiences of individual learners including linguistic scaffolds.
