High School Block:

English as an Additional Language B1.2

English as an Additional Language (EAL) B1.1 is a course designed to further enhance academic English skills, with focus placed on developing a wide range of literacy and language skills through interacting (speaking/listening), reading, and writing for a variety of purposes and audiences. Learners expand on their ability to participate in conversations by clarifying ideas and describing reactions. They will use English to talk, read, and write with increasing detail and more technical language. They will use English to explain, describe, and compare.

An important objective across all courses in the English as an Additional Language course pathway is to support learners’ English proficiency development in order to communicate effectively in varied contexts and with members of a diverse Canadian society. Learners are afforded dedicated time to focus on speaking, listening, reading, and writing, as aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Language and by using an action-oriented approach.

By the end of this course, learners will be consistently demonstrating competencies in English at the B1.2 level of the CEFR. This means that they can understand the main points of clear speech on familiar topics in work, school, and leisure. Learners will be able to discuss opinions on abstract topics, find information in the various sections of long texts and use writing to exchange thoughts, feelings, and information on a variety of personally relevant topics. They can produce simple connected texts on familiar or personal topics and explain experiences, plans, and opinions. They demonstrate effective strategies for academic and personal success while engaging in multicultural contexts through various modes of communication.
