Read Words with the TH Spelling

This resource package focuses on developing children’s ability to read words with the TH spelling in connected text, and provides generic lesson plans for word, sentence, and text level reading development.

The TH letter combination makes a voiced (vocal cords used) or unvoiced /th/ sound. It is most often voiced in structure words like that, or between two vowels, as in mother. The TH in think is an example of the unvoiced /th/ sound.

Many determiners, and students may require additional instruction to understand their meaning and usage.

Please note that this spelling does not need to be introduced in isolation of other spellings.

Read Words with the WH Spelling

This resource package focuses on developing children’s ability to read words with the WH spelling in connected text, and provides generic lesson plans for word, sentence, and text level reading development.

The WH letter pair makes the same sound as the single w (/w/) in most words. Occasionally it makes the /h/ sound, as in the words who, whole, and whose.

Please note that this spelling does not need to be introduced in isolation of other spellings.

Making, Sharing, and Justifying Predictions

This set of lessons explores exceptionalities by having students activate their prior knowledge through a whole class carousel brainstorm activity. Then, they identify what they would like to better understand about exceptionalities and view a video of testimonials to help develop their understanding. Finally, they experience the world through the eyes of a person with exceptionalities who narrates a short story. Students make predictions about the plot at various checkpoints through the narrative, and, in groups, students make, share, and justify their predictions with textual support.

CVC Decodable Resource 2

This is a generic resource package containing decodable texts that limit the use of digraphs and long vowels and introduce CVCC, CCVC, and some multi-syllabic words.

The pre-teaching of the letter names and sounds, and CVC word reading is assumed in the lesson plans.
