Curriculum Framework

Relationships and Connections

OVERVIEW

The curriculum has meaning for learners as it connects with and values their wider lives, acknowledging the profound influence of families and communities. By building connections with each other and each other’s communities, learners develop positive self-identities and strengthen relationships.

ENACTED IN THE CURRICULUM

This belief is enacted in the curriculum through both implicit and explicit instruction of the core social and emotional competencies which according to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), are self-management, self-awareness, social-awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. In practice this:

  • looks like learners collaborating, respecting, and supporting each other while celebrating diversity in all places and situations. Learners are managing emotions or working towards this and are developing strong bonds with others;
  • sounds like kind and empathic individuals who want the best for others. Learners can name their emotions and express these in a way that does not marginalize or make others uncomfortable; and
  • feels like being supported by others and supporting peers while working towards making a positive impact in the world around themself. Learners feel like they have the capacity to control their emotions.

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS

Relationships and connections are not just about school. Relationships with and connections to communities support a holistic approach which is essential to help learners progress along their own continuum of learning.

Relationships are not always easy and natural. Relationships take work, and building and fostering connections takes time and effort.

Alignment with New Brunswick Global Competencies

The tenet, Relationships and Connections, is closely aligned with two of the New Brunswick Global Competencies:

  • With emphasis on appreciating diverse worldviews, developing competency in Communication greatly supports building relationships and connections.
  • Collaboration involves establishing positive and respectful relationships with others.
