Memoir Masterclass: Reading Memoirs

In these lessons students will look at memoirs reflecting the diversity of the human experience including immigration, racial segregation, addiction, homelessness, and more. While reading these memoirs students will be asked to think critically about the impact these experiences had on the authors and to examine the craft of the writers. Students will be guided through the process of reading like a writer and identifying “craft” moves that they might employ in their own writing.

Media Studies Course Package

This Grade 12 Media Studies course empowers students to critically analyze media, explore its cultural influences, and address issues like marginalization and bias. Through units on theory, production, and creation, students develop media literacy, evaluate narratives across formats, and engage in meaningful discussions about global and local media landscapes. The course culminates in a student-driven media project, fostering creativity and real-world application.

Character Creation

These lessons will give students the opportunity to express themselves through creative writing. It will begin by exploring the concepts of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. The lesson will then focus on building characterization for an assigned ‘character card’ through brainstorming and note making. Students will examine exemplars of other creative writing and will then draft their own content. They will work through an editing and revision process and then will submit. The final stage of this unit is to practice presentation skills and then present their content to the class.

Introductory Wolastoqey Latuwewakon 110 Pronunciation

This bundle contains resources to help develop Wolastoqey latuwewakon pronunciation. While this has been developed specifically for the Wolastoqey Introductory curriculum, it may be useful for any group of Wolastoqey language learners.

This contains 7 bundles which can optionally be used for teaching the entire Wolastoqey 110 course. Many of the materials found here were originally part of the language kits used with the older curriculum. Educators should feel free to use the parts of these bundles which suit their own needs.

First Nation Literacy Plans K-12

First Nations literacy resources for K-12 students provide culturally relevant materials that highlight Indigenous stories, languages, and oral traditions. Poetry and Rebellion

Centered around the theme of rebellion, these lessons build on students’ understanding of poetry and gets them to investigate key moments in modern history such as the Civil Rights Movement, Residential Schools, and The Troubles, through the lens of poetry. Students will select and read one of several poems and research their historical contexts to develop and understanding of how these poets reflect on and explore the theme of rebellion. Students will work independently and collaboratively. At the end of these lessons, students will articulate their understanding of their chosen poet, poem, and historical context by participating in a small group poetry panel.

Book Club Introduction

These lessons will introduce students to selected novels with the purpose of choosing the most appropriate piece of literature for their book club unit. It will begin with a teacher-led introduction to the novels, including an overview of the varying perspectives available to choose from. Students will also be provided with time to explore the texts independently. Lessons will then focus on having the students reflect on the options available, with the purpose of creating a written, persuasive response which will include their rational for choosing their desired text. Finally, students will be introduced to the book club unit, including question prompts, and an outline of the expected weekly tasks.

Career Life Plan (Career Education Framework)

A Career Life Plan is a comprehensive education, career, and life plan documenting the learning needs, interests, and aspirations, and showcasing the accomplishments of each learner. This bundle supports achieving standards for the new Career Life Plan graduation requirement.

Learning To Pitch An IDEA

Students to develop their ability to ‘pitch’ an idea to an audience. Participants have the opportunity to develop a plan to present an idea of their own making and present a pitch for a new and innovative product, service or venture. This lesson plan is designed to be used in classrooms to teach students persuasive writing and public speaking skills.

Generating Ideas for Businesses and Projects

Public Speaking Activities Kit

The activities and resources include a mixture of videos, individual, group, and class activities, to help keep all students interested and engaged as they learn effective public speaking skills. The following activities and resources have been created by the Centre of Excellence for Entrepreneurship and have previously used and well-received by students during Speaking with Confidence workshops that took place during the summer of 2022. The activities and resources are suitable for students of all age groups and abilities, including EAL students.
